Knit Your Way Through Iceland

With PeaceTree, Shaina Bilow and Alice Travel

Day 1 in Iceland is set to be a delightful fusion of culinary adventure and cultural

exploration. After landing at Keflavik Airport, you'll take a convenient shuttle to your

hotel in Reykjavik, where you'll start your journey by immersing yourself in the flavors

of Iceland with a guided food tour. This culinary experience will introduce you to the

rich and unique tastes of Icelandic cuisine, offering a perfect introduction to the

country's culture. Following the tour, the afternoon is free for you to rest or explore.

As you wander through the vibrant Reykjavik city center, you'll have the chance to

explore charming yarn and sweater shops. The day culminates in a Welcome Dinner,

providing a relaxed setting to connect with fellow travelers and knitting enthusiasts,

setting the stage for a memorable Icelandic adventure.

Your second day in Iceland promises a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural wonders, all centered around the enchanting world of Icelandic wool and the breathtaking landscapesof Borgarfjörður. Begin your day at the Knitting Association ofIceland Yarn Shop, whereyou'll marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of handmade knitted and crocheted pieces. As you travel out of Reykjavik, you'll stop at the ISTEX factory to learn about modern wool processing techniques. We won’t miss the chance to explore Alafoss Yarn Shop, Iceland's  oldest, dating back to 1896.

Your journey continues to the picturesque Borgarfjörður Fjord on the west coast. Witness the stunning Hraunfossar Falls, where water appears to burst through ancient lava formations, and the vibrant Barnafoss Falls. Lunch will be provided

As the day unfolds, visit Ullarselið, a store celebrating the traditional and modern uses of Icelandic wool and natural materials, offering insights into both historical and contemporary processing techniques. After a day filled with exploration and learning, relax back in Reykjavik, with time for a little knitting with Shaina. We will reflect on the day's adventures over a provided dinner.

Day 3 of your Golden Circle adventure promises a blend of history, geology, and

natural wonders. Begin your day at Thingvellir National Park, a site of immense

historical significance, as it is the birthplace of the world's oldest parliament,

established in 930 AD. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since

2004, Thingvellir is also a geological marvel, with a striking canyon marking the

meeting point of two tectonic plates. Next, head to the Geysir geothermal area to

witness the exhilarating Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 5-7 minutes,

shooting water up to 30 meters into the air. Just a short drive away, you'll find

Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, where you'll be awe-inspired by the sight and

sound of thousands of tons of water cascading into a dramatic gorge. Follow the

pathways for breathtaking views of this majestic waterfall. Your journey continues

with a visit to Fridheimar Tomato Farm, where you'll discover the innovative

Icelandic techniques for year-round produce cultivation and enjoy a delightful

tomato soup lunch. Conclude your day with a relaxing evening at your lovely

accommodation in the Golden Circle area, with dinner included to round off this

unforgettable experience.

Day 4 promises to be a delightful immersion into the world of Icelandic wool. Your

journey begins with a half-day workshop at "Hespuhusid," where you will delve into the art of traditional Icelandic wool dyeing. This hands-on experience allows you to work with local materials, offering a unique insight into the cultural heritage of Icelandic craftsmanship. Following this creative morning, you'll head to "Uppspuni," a charming family-run wool processing farm, also known as a Mini Mill. Here, you'll witness the fascinating transformation of raw wool into beautiful, finished products, learning about the meticulous processes involved from sheep shearing to yarn spinning. After a day filled with creativity and learning, relax and knit at your accommodation in the picturesque Golden Circle area. With lunch and dinner included, you can savor the flavors of Iceland while reflecting and knitting on your enriching day.

Day 5 of your South Coast Adventure is a full day of touring and promises a captivating exploration of Iceland's breathtaking landscapes and geological wonders. As you journey through the scenic south coast, you'll traverse one of the country's primary agricultural regions, dotted with quintessential Icelandic farms and the charming sight of Icelandic horses grazing in the fields. On a

clear day, the majestic silhouettes of Mount Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes adorn the horizon, offering a glimpse into Iceland's fiery past. The route treats you to the awe-inspiring waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, perfect for capturing stunning photographs. Weather permitting, a unique experience awaits as you walk behind the cascading waters of Seljalandsfoss. Continuing

to Reynisfjara Beach, you'll marvel at its iconic black sands and dramatic basalt columns, while the Atlantic's roaring waves provide a mesmerizing backdrop. The journey leads across an expansive

lava field, a solemn reminder of the 18th-century eruption that shaped this landscape. A highlight of the day is the visit to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, where you can witness stunning icebergs drifting serenely in the deep, blue waters. Just a stone's throw away is Diamond Beach, a striking scene where glistening icebergs rest against the stark contrast of black sands before being swept into the sea. The exploration continues in Skaftafell, a renowned area within the park known for its breathtaking glaciers. Your day concludes in the tranquil village of Vik, where a hearty dinner awaits, providing the perfect end to an exhilarating day of exploration.

Day 6 offers a chance to just sit back, relax and knit! We will have

a knitting workshop and rest a bit from our travels, enjoying each

other’s company and the quaint village of Vik.

Day 7: Return to Reykjavik

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a scenic drive along

Iceland's picturesque south coast. Your first stop is the charming village of Hveragerdi,

uniquely situated in the heart of a geothermal area. Known as "The Flower Village,"

Hveragerdi boasts numerous greenhouses, all heated by the natural hot springs

nearby. As you leave the village, turn onto the southern coastal road, where you'll be

captivated by the magnificent sea waves and the haunting beauty of a once-thriving,

now-deserted community, culminating with a relaxing dip in the famous Sky Lagoon.

This natural wonder features warm, mineral-rich waters nestled in a striking setting.

Return to Reykjavik by the afternoon, and in the evening, join your group for a

memorable farewell dinner. Here, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on the incredible experiences and newfound friendships from your knitting adventure.
